Thank you for transporting me through your words! And inviting in contemplation…. especially around that last bit. Time “wasted” on the point A to B. I worked as a camp counselor on US military bases three summers in a row during college. We worked 9-5 Monday-Friday with the weekends off. This was how I first started traveling. How I could afford to. I always thought “what a shame we had to spend so much time traveling Friday night and Sunday, just to enjoy a bit of free time wandering about on Saturday.” After reading your post I realize how delicious those long bus + train rides were (around Europe mostly). How we laughed, got lost, shared stories, slept and then missed our stops and had to back track. This whole time I’ve thought “too bad we had to waste so much time in transit” because these days I have the luxury of traveling when I want - no special program required. I can choose the quickest way, spend however long I want in a given place more or less). It’s easy, it’s efficient, it’s (often) expensive. But most of my memories live in those three summers. Summers of discovery, connection, and wide eyed wonder.

I love this, and I can relate. I worked at a camp and on off days we drove all over the place spending more time in transit than in place. Magic days for sure. You should write up an essay on those times, would love to read more about them!
